Successfully Connecting Shelly 1L to a Double Switch: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hey everyone! I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation, and I wanted to share my recent success with integrating a Shelly 1L into my existing setup. It’s been a bit of a learning curve, but I’m thrilled to share what I’ve discovered!

The Challenge

I have a double switch in my home that controls two separate lamps. My goal was to make one of these lamps smart while keeping the other as a traditional, switch-controlled lamp. At first glance, it seemed straightforward, but I wasn’t entirely sure how to go about it. Would the Shelly 1L interfere with the existing wiring? How would I ensure that only one lamp became smart without affecting the other? These were the questions swirling in my head.

The Solution

After some research and experimentation, I found that it was indeed possible to achieve this setup. Here’s how I did it:

  1. Understanding the Wiring: The first step was to understand the existing wiring configuration. The double switch had two live wires controlling each lamp. I needed to identify which wire was responsible for which lamp.

  2. Installing the Shelly 1L: I decided to install the Shelly 1L on the live wire of the lamp I wanted to make smart. This involved carefully disconnecting the wire, attaching it to the Shelly device, and then reattaching it to the switch. The other lamp remained connected directly to its respective switch without any modifications.

  3. Configuring the Shelly 1L: Once the physical installation was complete, I used the Shelly app to configure the device. It was a breeze—just a matter of following the on-screen instructions to set up the smart lamp.

  4. Testing the Setup: The moment of truth arrived when I tested both lamps. The smart lamp responded perfectly to voice commands and app controls, while the traditional lamp continued to function as it always had. It worked!

The Outcome

This setup has been a game-changer for me. I now have the flexibility of a smart lamp without losing the simplicity of a traditional switch for the other lamp. It’s been incredibly satisfying to see this project come together, and I’m already brainstorming new ways to integrate more smart devices into my home.
