Successfully Integrated Telegram Bot for Home Notifications

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share my recent experience setting up a Telegram bot to send notifications about calendar events and home status updates. It’s been a fantastic addition to my smart home setup!

First, I set up the Telegram bot by messaging BotFather, which was straightforward. However, one thing I noticed that wasn’t mentioned in many guides is that you need to send a message to your bot before it can interact with you. Once that was sorted, I configured the chat ID in my Home Assistant settings.

I started simple by sending a notification when Home Assistant boots up. This was a great way to confirm everything was working. From there, I moved on to more complex automations, like checking if anyone is home and if major devices are left on. While there are occasional false positives due to devices dropping offline, it’s been a helpful reminder to double-check everything.

The real magic came when I integrated calendar notifications. I set up reminders for upcoming events and even included actionable buttons to reschedule notifications. It’s amazing how interactive this setup can be!

One challenge I faced was getting the calendar offset to work properly. After some research, I created a sensor to act as a middleman between the calendar and the automation. This sensor checks if the next event is within six hours and triggers a notification when it turns on. Pairing this with actionable buttons has made managing my schedule so much easier.

Overall, the process was a mix of trial and error, but the result has been worth it. My home feels more connected, and I’ve gained peace of mind knowing I won’t miss important events or tasks.

If anyone has questions or needs help setting something up, feel free to reach out! I’d love to share more details or troubleshoot together.

Best regards,
