Successfully Integrating an Outdoor Security Camera with Hubitat

I’ve been on a mission to enhance my home security setup, and I’m thrilled to share my recent success with integrating an outdoor security camera into my Hubitat ecosystem. Let me walk you through my journey and hopefully inspire others to explore similar solutions!

The Challenge

I wanted an affordable, battery-powered outdoor camera that could detect motion and alert me without relying solely on the manufacturer’s app. After some research, I stumbled upon the Zumimall 2K Wireless Security Camera. It ticked all the boxes: solar-powered, motion detection, and decent range. However, the real challenge was integrating it seamlessly with Hubitat.

The Solution

Here’s how I made it work:

  1. Camera Setup: I started by setting up the camera using the Zumimall app. It was straightforward—pairing it with my network and testing the motion detection feature.

  2. Tasker Integration: To bridge the gap between the camera and Hubitat, I used Tasker on my Android tablet. Tasker acted as the intermediary, detecting notifications from the Zumimall app and triggering actions in Hubitat.

  3. Hubitat Virtual Motion Sensor: I created a virtual motion sensor in Hubitat. This allowed me to monitor the camera’s motion detection status directly within my Hubitat dashboard.

  4. Maker API: By leveraging Hubitat’s Maker API, I set up a URL to trigger the virtual motion sensor whenever Tasker detected a motion alert from the camera.

The Outcome

The result? A seamless integration where Hubitat now receives motion alerts from my outdoor camera. It’s been a game-changer for monitoring my driveway without relying solely on the manufacturer’s app. Plus, the camera’s solar panel means I don’t have to worry about frequent battery changes!
