Hey everyone, I’ve been working on integrating my Foscam IP cameras with ActionTiles and wanted to share my experience in case it helps others. I’ve got a set of Foscam wireless IP cameras that spit out an RTSP live stream link, but I wanted to use these with ActionTiles. Unfortunately, I heard that ActionTiles won’t be supporting RTSP any time soon. So, I decided to experiment with forwarding the stream to MJPEG or a similar format that might allow me to view it on ActionTiles. I chose to use a Raspberry Pi for this conversion since I only need it to work in-house.
I stumbled upon some great resources online that guided me through the process of setting up the Raspberry Pi to handle the RTSP to MJPEG conversion. It was a bit of a learning curve, but I’m really happy with the results! The key was figuring out the right software and configuration to ensure smooth streaming without any lag. I ended up using MotionEyeOS on the Raspberry Pi, which made the setup much easier than I anticipated.
One thing I struggled with initially was getting the MJPEG stream to display correctly in ActionTiles. After some trial and error, I realized that specifying the correct MIME type and ensuring the stream was accessible over the local network were crucial. I also had to tweak some settings on the Raspberry Pi to optimize performance, especially during peak usage times.
For anyone else looking to do something similar, I’d recommend starting with a simple setup and gradually adding more features as you become comfortable. It’s also worth checking out forums and community-driven solutions, as there are often pre-made scripts and configurations that can save you a lot of time. If you’re not familiar with Raspberry Pi or command-line interfaces, don’t worry—there are plenty of user-friendly guides out there!
Overall, this project has been incredibly rewarding. Being able to view my Foscam cameras directly in ActionTiles has added a whole new level of convenience to my smart home setup. I’m now considering expanding this setup to include more cameras and possibly even integrating it with other smart devices for a more seamless experience.
If anyone else is working on something similar, I’d love to hear your approach or any tips you might have! Happy tinkering everyone!
