Successfully Integrating Smart Door Sensors with Google Smart Home

I recently embarked on a project to integrate my existing analogue window sensors into my Google Smart Home setup. After some research and experimentation, I found a solution that works perfectly! Here’s my journey and some tips for anyone looking to do the same.

The Challenge:
My home has hardwired window sensors that use a simple NO (Normally Open) contact mechanism. I wanted to connect these to my Google Smart Home ecosystem to monitor door and window status. The challenge was finding the right hardware and configuration that could handle these sensors without requiring significant rewiring.

The Solution:
I discovered that using a Shelly 1 smart switch was the perfect fit for this project. The Shelly 1 can be configured to monitor external sensors and send their status to Google Home. Here’s how I set it up:

  1. Hardware Setup:

    • Connected the Shelly 1 to my home network via Wi-Fi.
    • Wired the analogue sensors to the Shelly 1’s input terminals. The Shelly 1 can handle up to 24V DC, which was perfect for my sensors.
  2. Configuration in Google Home:

    • Added the Shelly 1 as a new device in the Google Home app.
    • Configured the sensor inputs in the Shelly app to report status changes to Google Home.
  3. Automation:

    • Set up routines in Google Home to trigger notifications when a door or window is opened or closed.
    • Integrated the sensors with my existing security system for added peace of mind.

Tips for Success:

  • Check Compatibility: Ensure your sensors’ voltage and wiring are compatible with the Shelly 1 or any other device you choose.
  • Firmware Updates: Keep your Shelly devices updated to the latest firmware for optimal performance.
  • Testing: Test each sensor connection thoroughly before setting up automations.

Outcome:
This integration has significantly enhanced my home’s security and convenience. Now, I can monitor my doors and windows from anywhere and receive real-time alerts. It’s a cost-effective solution that leverages existing hardware and integrates seamlessly with Google Smart Home.

If you’re looking to do something similar, I highly recommend exploring the Shelly range or other compatible devices. The key is to find a device that can handle your sensors’ specifications and integrate smoothly with your smart home platform.

Happy automating! :rocket:
