Successfully Rediscovering a Z-Wave Outlet After Factory Reset

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my experience with resolving a Z-Wave device issue that I encountered recently. I hope this helps someone else who might be facing a similar problem!

I had this GE 14288 Z-Wave outlet that I had previously included in my OpenHAB setup. Everything was working smoothly until I decided to make some changes. Unfortunately, things started to go haywire, and I couldn’t pinpoint the exact issue. After some troubleshooting, I tried excluding the outlet, but it didn’t seem to work properly. I went through the process of deleting it from the binding and even did a factory reset on the outlet. However, I was unable to rediscover it again for inclusion in my setup.

I used zwave2mqtt to check the controller, and it didn’t list the deleted node ID. This was confusing because I thought the factory reset would clear all previous configurations. I started to wonder if there was something I was missing or if there was a specific step I hadn’t taken yet.

After some research and reaching out to the community, I found that sometimes the Z-Wave network needs a fresh start. I decided to reset my Z-Wave controller, which involved unplugging it, waiting for a few minutes, and then plugging it back in. Once the controller was reset, I made sure to put the outlet into inclusion mode again. This time, the discovery process worked without any issues!

Here are the steps I took to resolve the problem:

  1. Reset the Z-Wave Controller: Unplug the controller, wait for about 5 minutes, and then plug it back in. This ensures that the controller starts fresh.
  2. Put the Outlet into Inclusion Mode: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to put the outlet into inclusion mode. For GE devices, this usually involves pressing the button on the outlet until the LED starts flashing.
  3. Attempt Rediscovery: Use your Z-Wave binding in OpenHAB to scan for new devices. The outlet should now be detected and added to your setup.
  4. Verify the Configuration: After adding the outlet, check the logs to ensure that it’s communicating correctly with the controller.

I was really relieved when it finally worked. It just goes to show how sometimes a fresh start can make all the difference. I hope this helps anyone else who’s struggling with similar issues. If you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask!

Happy automating! :rocket:
