Successfully Setting Up a Morning Spotify Playlist Routine for All Dots Group

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my experience in setting up a morning routine to play a Spotify playlist on my All Dots group. It was a bit of a puzzle at first, but I managed to figure it out!

The Goal:
I wanted my Spotify playlist to play every morning at a specific time across all my smart speakers. It’s a great way to start the day with some upbeat tunes!

The Challenge:
When I first tried creating the routine, I noticed that the app only allowed me to select individual devices, not the entire group. This was a bit frustrating because I didn’t want to set up the same routine for each speaker separately.

The Solution:
After a bit of research and trial and error, I discovered that while the app doesn’t directly support group selection, there’s a workaround. Here’s how I did it:

  1. Create the Routine:

    • Open the SmartThings app and go to Routines.
    • Start a new routine and set the trigger to the desired time.
  2. Select the Action:

    • Choose the action to play music from Spotify.
    • Select the specific playlist you want.
  3. Device Selection:

    • Instead of selecting individual devices, I realized that if I had previously grouped my speakers in Spotify, they would appear as a single entity. This wasn’t immediately obvious, but it worked perfectly!
  4. Test the Routine:

    • Save the routine and test it out. I was thrilled when all my speakers started playing the playlist at the scheduled time!

Tips for Others:

  • Ensure your Spotify app is up-to-date and that all your speakers are properly connected.
  • If grouping isn’t working, try adding each device individually to the routine. It’s a bit more time-consuming, but it gets the job done.
  • Don’t hesitate to explore different settings and options within the app. Sometimes the solution is just a few taps away!

I hope this helps someone else looking to create a similar routine. It’s amazing how these smart devices can enhance our daily routines!
