Successfully Setting Up Google Home Scenes for Camera Automation

Hey everyone! I wanted to share my success story with setting up Google Home scenes to automate my exterior cameras. It’s been a bit of a learning curve, but I’m thrilled with how it turned out. Here’s what I did and some tips for anyone looking to do the same.First, I wanted my cameras to automatically turn on when I leave the house and turn off when I return. The idea was to enhance security without having to manually switch them on or off. I started by creating a scene in Google Home called ‘Activate Cameras.’ I thought it would be as simple as saying, ‘Hey Google, activate cameras,’ but initially, nothing happened beyond the camera lights turning on. Frustrating, right? After some research and trial and error, I realized I needed to tweak the scene settings. I discovered that specifying exact commands within the scene was crucial. So, I adjusted the scene to include direct commands for each camera, ensuring they not only turned on but also started recording. This made all the difference! Here’s a quick breakdown of what worked for me:- Create a Custom Scene: In Google Home, go to the scenes section and create a new one.- Add Specific Commands: Instead of a general command, add specific actions like ‘Turn on Camera 1’ and ‘Start recording Camera 2.’- Test Thoroughly: Run the scene a few times to ensure everything works as expected.I also found that integrating this with Google Nest cameras added an extra layer of security, as they can detect motion and send notifications. It’s been a game-changer for peace of mind, especially when I’m away from home for extended periods. If anyone else is working on similar automation, feel free to reach out! I’d love to hear about your experiences and any tips you might have. Happy automating! :rocket:
