Upgrading traditional switches to smart solutions has been a rewarding journey, and I’d love to share my experience with the community! ![]()
I recently replaced an old, noisy wall switch in my garage with a Shelly Plus 1. The process was straightforward, and the results were nothing short of amazing! The best part? My family was thrilled with the new, silent operation and the ability to control the lights via the Shelly app. ![]()
However, I encountered a challenge when trying to integrate a second switch for our outdoor lighting. The existing setup involved a 12V transformer connected to multiple wall switches, and I wasn’t sure how to transition this to a fully functional smart system without sacrificing the tactile switch experience. After some research and experimentation, I discovered that combining a Shelly Plus 1 with a traditional relay switch was the perfect solution. This setup allows all three wall switches to function seamlessly, even without an internet connection. ![]()
Here’s what I learned:
- Plan ahead: Sketching the existing wiring and understanding the current setup saved me a lot of time.
- Test configurations: Start with one switch before committing to the full installation.
- Community support: If you’re unsure about anything, don’t hesitate to ask for advice. The Shelly community is incredibly helpful!

This project has inspired me to explore more smart home upgrades, and I can’t wait to share my next adventure with you all! If you’ve made similar upgrades or have tips to share, I’d love to hear about them. Let’s keep the smart home revolution going! ![]()
