The wired power specifications for G400 doorbell

After the G400 doorbell was launched, some users reported that using an 8VAC power supply could not drive the doorbell properly (especially when starting the infrared light at night, it would immediately restart). Among them, European users gave the most feedback, and we have collected some power specifications that cannot drive the doorbell properly, as shown below:

The official power specifications for G400 are 8-24V AC 1.3A 50/60Hz or 8-24V DC 0.8A, which means that in AC power mode, the minimum output power of the transformer needs to reach 8V × 1.3A=10.4VA. We actually tested that G400 can also work stably under 8V/1A (power 8VA), provided that there are no other loads on the wire.

But currently, most users who are still using the 8V/1A power supply are still experiencing power shortage issues. If your home’s weak current system happens to be using the 8V/1A, please let me know the load situation on the line (whether other low-power appliances or electrical devices are connected in series or parallel). Can you assist in measuring the voltage on the power supply after G400 is powered on? If you can provide relevant information, I would be very grateful.

WHAT IS THE WEAK SYSTEM?

means Low-voltage system, Usually the voltage is below 48V, which is different from the Power system (voltage 100-240V)

how is this power supply (US) for the G400 doorbell? thanks!

This is what I’m using right now, and probably where my Apple Home motion detecting and recording not working most times .

I just ordered this one instead and it arrives at 4am to 8am tomorrow.

The current one I have gives .5amp but the requirement is 1.3amp so this one I ordered is 1.6amp.

I never thought to check this , cause I used this .5amp PS on my past 3 video doorbells without issue never thought of this one requiring higher amp.

Lesson learned for me! Look forward to tomorrow and connecting this new one to hopefully get to 100% Apple Home performance

That will work just fine. I used that to install mine and make sure everything was working properly before I mounted it outside my front door. (it was Winter and below zero)

It’s OK for G400, the voltage and output power all are suitable for it

Hello friend, I’m Donie the PM in charge of Aqara cameras

Firstly, it seems that there is no problem with your current power specifications (of course, if there are no other loads on the wires). If the doorbell’s detection function on Aqara Home is working properly, then it must not be a problem with the power supply. I am not sure if you have contacted Aqara customer service to report the issue. The decrease in detection performance in HomeKit may be due to the following reasons:

  1. The video resolution connected to HomeKit is too low, which affects the AI analysis of Apple home hub devices. Due to G400’s 3:4 aspect ratio, this resolution format has encountered problems in the latest upgrade package of HomeKit. Apple is working with us to fix it and needs to update the iOS system version to solve it. If you determine that the problem is with low resolution, you need to be patient and wait for Apple to fix it.

  2. Poor network conditions can cause event records to be lost if videos on the Apple Home App are interrupted or not smooth. If possible, you can compare the differences between WiFi and PoE connections.

If the issue with the newly purchased power supply still persists, it may be one of the reasons I described above. Please continue to provide feedback to me.

Ok, I just changed the power supply transformer for my G400 doorbell from a 24VAC 0.5a to a 24VAC 1.6a. Lets see if that helps my issues with motion detection and recordings being missed completely for hours/days in Apple Home. thanks to Donie, I checked my transformer, I being using for my last 3+ video doorbells without issue and noticed I was only using a 24VAC 0.5a output PS, which is well below the required 1.3a needed, and this new one is 1.6am. I installed it a few hours ago when I saw out from the old 0.5a one and disconnected my G410 at the same time. Here is some graphs to show the amps the Eve Smart outlet was showing being consumed between the two different power supplies and doorbells as well before and after my changes. thanks Donie!!

To confirm

Does the doorbell work well when powered to specifications for G400 are 8-24V AC 1.3A 50/60Hz or 8-24V DC 0.8A, ?

I’m about to install mine so want to be sure

Hi John, from what Donie writes,

if a AC power supply is used, a 1.3a transformer is required.

if a DC power supply is used; a 0.8a transformer is required.

I don’t disagree, this can be confusing since most doorbells can use 2 different style transformers.

Hope this is clearer.

Thanks!

Hi.

Looking to join in here and get some advice on the same topic. I have just bought the Aqara G400 and I got a 24V 500MA 8m cable to power the doorbell. Will this work with the doorbell? I have seen that maybe 500MA isn’t ideal but I really don’t understand all of the different bits I’ve read so far. I’m in the UK if that makes any difference.
Thanks
Craig

Hello, welcome to the forum.
0.5 amperes is a small current for the G400.
To understand the process, a current of 1.5 and a voltage of 8 to 24 volts, for the G400 this is an analogue of the condition of filling the tank at a speed of 1.5 liters per second with a pressure head of 8 to 24.
If you give water less than 1.5 liters per second and the water flow rate is 1.5, your water supply system will not perform its function.

Thank you. So I would be better getting the 24v 1A plug and cable to make sure I have enough power?

It’s better to stock up and take 1.5 amps.

Thank you for clarifying

Based on recent feedback regarding the power supply issues of G400, I have added the following solutions for users’ reference:

  1. Does your original indoor chime look like the one shown in the picture below?

  2. If the first point is true, do you accept that the original indoor bell won’t work after G400 rings? If accepted, I can provide a simple wiring modification plan to help you make the doorbell work properly. You can use the G400’s built-in indoor chime instead of the original one,Referring to the figure below, the core change is that you need to use a power cord to connect between the Trans and Front pins of the original chime.

  3. If you are unwilling to give up the original chime, I offer a new solution for your reference. You may need to purchase additional Aqara accessory(Single Switch Module T1 (With Neutral) or Dual Relay Module T2) and know how to modify the circuit and complete some automation settings in Aqara Home app, Please refer to my post on Aqara Forum.
