Troubleshooting Google Services on Fritz.Box 7590

I recently switched my home network from Fritz.Box 7490 to 7590 and encountered issues with Google services. All my Google Nest and Home devices stopped responding to voice commands, and my Android phone struggled to load Google apps over the local network. Here’s what I discovered and how I resolved it:

Problem Identification:

  • Google Nest and Home devices would light up but not respond to voice commands.
  • Android apps using Google services would take hours to load on the local network.
  • Devices worked fine with mobile data or a VPN, indicating the issue was specific to the local network.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. DNS Configuration: Changed DNS settings to Google’s public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) for both IPv4 and IPv6. This didn’t resolve the issue.
  2. Wi-Fi Frequency: Switched from Wi-Fi 6 to Wi-Fi 4 and changed the channel. No improvement was observed.
  3. Device Reconfiguration: Unlinked and re-linked all Google devices. They still didn’t function correctly.
  4. Router固件升级: Updated the router firmware to the latest version. The issue persisted.
  5. Firewall and UPnP Settings: Disabled the router’s firewall and enabled UPnP to ensure no ports were being blocked.
  6. QoS Configuration: Reviewed and adjusted Quality of Service (QoS) settings to prioritize Google services.

Solution:
After extensive research, I realized the issue was related to the router’s handling of multicast DNS (mDNS) and DNS Service Discovery (DNS-SD). Google services rely heavily on these protocols for device discovery and communication.

Fix Implemented:

  • Enabled mDNS and DNS-SD: Updated the router’s settings to explicitly allow mDNS and DNS-SD traffic.
  • Adjusted Firewall Rules: Created specific firewall rules to permit UDP ports 5353 and TCP ports 5353, which are essential for mDNS and DNS-SD.

Outcome:
Within minutes of applying these changes, all Google devices began responding to voice commands, and my Android phone loaded Google services without delay. The network delay issue was resolved, and everything functioned as expected.

Takeaway:
If you’re experiencing similar issues after switching routers or updating firmware, check your router’s configuration for mDNS and DNS-SD settings. Ensuring these protocols are properly supported can resolve many Google service-related problems on your local network.

I hope this experience helps others facing similar challenges with their smart home setups!
