Last weekend, I went on a short camping trip, and I decided to bring along a few of my favorite smart devices to test out their functionality without an internet connection. While it was mostly a fun experiment, it did reveal a few things I hadn’t considered before.
One of the devices I brought was a smart plug, which I wanted to use to control a small lamp. I was curious to see how it would behave without an internet connection. To my surprise, the plug worked perfectly fine—it turned on and off as expected, and the local app on my phone responded instantly. My smart camera, which relies heavily on cloud services for motion detection and notifications, was essentially rendered useless without an internet connection. This made me realize how much I’ve come to rely on cloud-based features, and it highlighted the importance of having a backup plan for critical devices.
I also decided to test my smart speaker’s offline capabilities. While it couldn’t access any internet-based services, it still responded to local voice commands and played music stored on my phone. This was a pleasant surprise, and it made me think about how I could use these devices more effectively in situations where internet access isn’t guaranteed.
One thing I learned from this experiment is the importance of understanding how each device operates offline. Some devices are designed to function independently, while others heavily depend on cloud services. This knowledge can be invaluable, especially in emergency situations or when traveling.
