While it’s always exciting to expand your smart home setup, sometimes things don’t go as smoothly as we’d like. The Problem
I recently purchased four Ecolink PIR-ZWAVE2 Motion Detectors to enhance my home security. However, I encountered a significant hurdle when trying to add them to my Veralite system. Despite multiple attempts, the sensors wouldn’t connect. I tried everything from ensuring the Veralite was in inclusion mode to placing the sensors directly next to the hub, but nothing worked. It was quite frustrating, especially since I’ve had no issues with other Z-Wave devices in the past.
My Journey to a Solution
After some research and reaching out to the community, I realized the issue might be related to how the sensors were being enrolled. I decided to try a different approach:
- Factory Reset: I made sure each sensor was factory reset to ensure a clean start.
- Manual Inclusion: Instead of relying on the Veralite’s automatic inclusion, I manually added each sensor through the Z-Wave settings. This involved sending specific inclusion commands and waiting for confirmation from the sensor’s LED indicators.
- Firmware Update: I also checked if there were any firmware updates available for both the Veralite and the sensors, installing them as needed.

After several attempts and tweaking my approach, I finally managed to get all four sensors successfully enrolled. The key takeaway for me was the importance of a step-by-step, methodical process. Sometimes, the simplest solutions require the most patience.
Preventative Measures
To avoid similar issues in the future, I’ve made it a habit to:
- Always factory reset new devices before inclusion.
- Use manual inclusion for devices that have given me trouble in the past.
- Regularly check for firmware updates for both my hub and devices.
