I’ve been running the Aqara U400 smart lock in daily use, and after living with it for a while I can confidently say it’s one of the most solid smart locks I’ve owned.
What I like most:
-
Reliability: It just works. Locking, unlocking, and status reporting have been rock-solid with no missed events or weird delays.
-
Multiple unlock methods done right: Fingerprint, keypad, app, automations — all are fast and consistent. Fingerprint recognition in particular has been very reliable.
-
Build quality: The hardware feels substantial and well-built. It doesn’t feel like a “gadget” lock — it feels like a real door lock that happens to be smart.
-
Integration: Works cleanly with Home Assistant and Aqara’s ecosystem. Status updates are accurate, and automations behave exactly as expected. Integration with Matter is another story, fought with that for a couple days. It’s my understanding there is an official post on how to handle this cleanly.
-
Quiet and smooth operation: The motor action is smooth and noticeably quieter than some other smart locks I’ve tried.
Day-to-day experience:
This lock has become completely invisible in daily life, which is exactly what I want from something on a primary door. Family members use different unlock methods without friction, and there’s been no need to “babysit” it or troubleshoot odd behavior.
Bottom line:
The U400 strikes a great balance between smart features and traditional lock reliability. It doesn’t overcomplicate things, and it doesn’t cut corners on the basics either. If you’re already in the Aqara ecosystem — or even if you’re just looking for a dependable smart lock that plays nicely with automations — this one is absolutely worth considering.
