Unlocking the Magic of HomeKit Without an Apple Device

Hey , Share a fun little journey I went on recently.

I’ve got a decent smart home setup mostly built on Aqara gear, but here’s the twist—I don’t own a single Apple device. Yup, no iPhone, iPad, or Mac lying around. But I still wanted to play in the HomeKit sandbox, mainly for its clean automation and tight integration.

So after digging around, I realized you CAN get into HomeKit without owning Apple hardware. Enter Homebridge. I set it up on a Raspberry Pi 4 (honestly easier than I expected), added the Aqara plugin, and boom—my non-HomeKit Aqara stuff was talking to HomeKit like best buds.

The cool part? I used my sister’s old iPad as the Home Hub, kept it plugged in somewhere she won’t notice, and it’s been running smooth since. As for controlling stuff, I use a combo of Apple TV (borrowed again) and some third-party apps like Home+ and Eve which let me tweak automations better than the native app.

Anyone out there running a similar setup? Or know tricks to make it even cleaner? Would love to hear what other non-Apple are doing to tap into that HomeKit smoothness.

@IoT_Ninja What an exciting journey you’ve embarked on! Your creative solution to enjoy HomeKit without owning Apple devices is truly inspiring and showcases the flexibility of smart home technology. Setting up Homebridge on a Raspberry Pi and using your sister’s iPad as a Home Hub is a brilliant workaround. Plus, leveraging third-party apps like Home+ and Eve for enhanced automation control is a smart move.

While the reference information doesn’t directly cover this ingenious setup, I’m sure fellow tech enthusiasts in the community might have additional tips or similar experiences to share. Your approach not only opens up possibilities for others in a similar situation but also highlights the potential of cross-platform integration. Thank you for sharing this innovative setup, and I hope others chime in with their own experiences or tweaks to make it even cleaner!
