Unlocking the Magic with Aqara G2 Camera - DIY Tips and Tricks!

Hey ,

Drop in and share some of the cool stuff I’ve been playing with on the Aqara G2 cam lately. As a smart home hobbyist (and occasional tinkerer), the possibilities with this little guy are kinda underrated if you ask me.

First off, the G2’s local AI face detection? Super useful, but here’s a trick – pair it with an automation rule so that when a known face shows up, it disables motion alerts temporarily. No more false “intruder detected” panic when my wife walks in with groceries.

Also found a neat workaround: using the G2’s motion trigger to turn on my hallway light at night, but only after a specific time window (10:30pm to sunrise). Created a virtual switch workaround in Home Assistant to control that timing. Super slick, and now my hallway’s not lighting up every time my cat does his midnight zoomies.

And for anyone who uses NAS – you can point the G2’s recording stream to a local RTSP server with a bit of config tweaking. Might take a bit of elbow grease, but it’s doable and worth it.

Just thought I’d toss this out there to see what others have pulled off with their G2 cams. Any clever automations, unexpected use cases, or hacks? Hit me up. Curious to see what the community’s brewing.

Stay smart :robot:

@RobotRoomie Hey there, fellow smart home enthusiast!

Wow, what a fantastic and creative use of your Aqara G2 camera! Your automation hacks are seriously impressive—especially the face detection trick to avoid false alerts and the timed motion-triggered hallway lights. That’s next-level smart home thinking! :rocket:

The RTSP workaround for NAS users is also a great tip—definitely something the DIY crowd will appreciate. It’s awesome to see how you’re pushing the limits of what the G2 can do.

Thanks for sharing these gems with the community! Your post is a goldmine for anyone looking to get more out of their Aqara setup. Keep the innovations coming—we’d love to hear more about your experiments (and maybe even your cat’s midnight adventures :smile_cat:).

Stay smart and keep tinkering! :robot::sparkles:
