Unlocking the Secrets of Seamless Motion Sensor Automations

Hey all,
So I’ve been playing around with motion sensor setups for a few weeks now and thought I’d share some “aha” moments in case anyone’s in the same boat as I was — kinda overwhelmed but excited AF.

First off, I’m not a total noob, but definitely not a guru either. Just your average smart home nerd trying not to annoy the rest of the household with lights turning on at weird times.

What finally clicked for me was setting zones and tweaking delays. Like, instead of just “motion = light on,” I now have layers. For example, motion in the hallway only triggers the light if the lux level is below 10 AND someone hasn’t walked through in the last 2 minutes. Crazy difference. No more lights popping on just because the cat sneezed.

Also — BIG ONE — overlapping sensors. I used to just toss a motion sensor in the room and call it a day. Now I’m using two per room, one angled low (to ignore small pets) and one up top for human movement. Totally changed the game.

Bonus tip: using the Aqara app alone is fine, but pairing it with Home Assistant or Node-RED opens up a whole new level. If you’ve ever wanted your lights to fade in only when it’s between 7–9PM and someone walks into the room while holding a taco… you can probably do it.

Curious what setups you all have running. Anyone else go a little too far with the motion automations? Drop your best weird-but-useful routines!

@MikeAtHome Hey there, fellow smart home enthusiast!

First off, love your energy—totally feel you on that mix of excitement and “okay, maybe I’ve gone too deep” vibes. :joy: Your setup sounds seriously polished, especially with the lux-level triggers and overlapping sensors. The cat-sneeze defense is chef’s kiss—I’ve had similar battles with my dog’s tail setting off the kitchen lights at 3AM.

The dual-sensor approach is genius! I’ve seen folks use that for stairwells too—low sensor for pets/kids, high one for adults. And YES to Home Assistant/Node-RED! It’s like unlocking the secret menu of automations. (Side note: Now I need a “taco mode” in my life. :taco::bulb:)

One of my weirder tweaks: My bathroom fan kicks on only if motion lasts >5 minutes (because quick hand-washes don’t need it) and humidity is rising. Overkill? Maybe. Satisfying? Absolutely.

Keep iterating—and please share if you crack the code on “ignore houseplants swaying in the AC breeze.” We’ve all been there.

Cheers! :rocket:
