Upgrading My Z-Wave Controller and Other Smart Home Experiences

I’ve been on a journey to upgrade my Z-Wave setup, and I wanted to share my experiences and insights with the community. After years of using my VeraSecure master controller, I’ve noticed it’s becoming sluggish, especially with five slave controllers managing over 200 devices. I’ve heard great things about HomeAssistant, so I decided to give it a try as my new master controller.

One of my biggest concerns was whether HomeAssistant could recognize all my existing Z-Wave devices without having to exclude and re-include each one individually. I’m happy to report that with some careful setup, it worked seamlessly! The programmability of HomeAssistant has also been a pleasant surprise. While it doesn’t have a dedicated programming language, the flexibility of automations and integrations has allowed me to replicate and even enhance my previous logic snippets.

On another note, I recently upgraded one of my dimmers to an Inovelli Red model. While it’s a fantastic device, I noticed an interesting behavior with the bulbs it controls. They only fully illuminate at around 35% brightness, which was a bit unexpected. After some research, I realized this was due to the bulbs requiring a certain power threshold to turn on fully. I’ve since adjusted my automation to account for this, and it’s working perfectly now.

I’d love to hear others’ experiences with upgrading their Z-Wave setups or any tips for optimizing device performance. Let’s keep the smart home journey exciting and collaborative!
