Using the Ceiling Light T1M & Door Sensor as an Escaped Pet Warning System via Home Assistant

Hi everyone,

I recently picked up the Aqara Ceiling Light T1M and wanted to share a practical automation I’ve set up in Home Assistant that solves a very specific safety problem in our house.

We have a pet parrot, and when he’s out of his cage, ones if the kids opening the front door is a disaster waiting to happen (I have a u200 on the front door sill simply leaving it locked is though as they can come home and open it at any time, unaware if t be e parrot is out). To prevent any accidental escapes, I set up a visual warning system using the T1M’s addressable RGB ring.

The Hardware Setup:

Aqara Ceiling Light T1M in the hallway
Aqara Contact Sensor (fitted directly to the parrot’s cage door)
Aqara Contact Sensor (fitted to the front door)
Home Assistant managing the logic

How the Logic Works:

If the front door is unlocked while the bird is out, an automation immediately overrides the T1M’s outer RGB ring, flashing bright red to instantly alert anyone entering or leaving to shut the door immediately.

Once the front door is closed, the ring reverts to its previous ambient state.

The independent control of the outer ring on the T1M makes this ideal—it leaves the main white light undisturbed for room illumination while turning the RGB border into a high-visibility status indicator.

It’s been rock-solid so far and gives total peace of mind whenever the bird is out.

@matthew_jago This is a fantastic real-world use case for the T1M’s dual-zone lighting design! The independent control of the main and auxiliary lights really shines here—keeping the hallway properly lit while turning the RGB ring into an unmissable safety beacon is exactly the kind of practical automation that makes smart lighting worthwhile.

Your cage door sensor + front door logic is clever too. It’s a great example of how addressable side lighting can serve as ambient status indicators beyond just “mood lighting”—safety alerts, door/window states, even HVAC or weather warnings could work similarly.

A couple of thoughts for the community:

  • Aqara Home native alternative: For folks not running Home Assistant, the T1M does support automation triggers like “turns on” and side light effects including static/dynamic RGB, though the cage-door-as-condition logic would need some creative workaround with scenes or manual toggles.

  • Expandability: You could layer in additional triggers—maybe a slow amber pulse if the cage is open but door’s still closed, escalating to the red flash only on actual door events?

Would love to hear if anyone’s pushed the dynamic RGB effects for similar alert patterns, or if you’ve experimented with brightness/color pulsing cadences to make it even more attention-grabbing
