W500 Thermostat not reporting energy at all

I have installed a few W500 thermostats around the house, and I’ve just noticed that they don’t all seem to report their energy consumption (but the power does give realistic numbers)? I’ve created integral helpers over the power in Home Assistant to estimate it, you can see the comparisons here (blue energy line is the sensor from the device, yellow energy line is the estimated one), on two devices:

Strangely, one of the seems to be behaving correctly?

I’m using these with Home Assistant, using zigbee2mqtt, and I’ve made sure the firmware was fully up-to-date, both using the Aqara app and the zigbee2mqtt OTA support.

Might there be a hardware problem with some of my devices? Thanks in advance!

@pphaneuf Since the live power values look plausible, I would compare one working and one affected W500 over the same heating cycle: note the firmware and Zigbee2MQTT versions, the raw energy value and its last update time, and the Home Assistant energy entity. If the raw value advances but the HA entity stays flat, that points to the reporting or mapping path; if the raw value itself stays fixed, the device side needs closer investigation. I would hold off on calling it a hardware fault until those two cases are separated.

The ones not working, the raw value stays at zero in Zigbee2MQTT, and I don’t think I’ve seen it not be zero:

The one that’s working is… maybe not 100% working, but nearly? It reports the right value in both Z2M and HA, but occasionally (I think there might have been a Z2M/HA restart due to an update here?), it’ll go down to zero, but come back up to what it should be when it starts actually using power:

I think in this situation, the issue could either be in the firmware or in Z2M?

I’ll be sticking to my integral estimate helpers for now, but it would be great if I could do without!

Officially, the W500 isn’t supported with Z2M directly, the HA support is by using an Aqara Hub, then use Matter over Bridge support to get the information into HA… I understand why they’re doing this, as a fair bit of logic for the W500 seems to be implemented in the hubs (for example, the scheduling), but I’m okay with doing the scheduling “manually” in HA, and would rather not have more hubs involved! In particular, the different W500s are far from each other, and while this is no problem on my main Zigbee network (because other devices act as routers), it might not be so reliable on a separate Zigbee network…

I re-paired one of them (with the issue) to an Aqara M2 Hub that I had kicking around, and it’s not working either: the Aqara app shows the instant power, but not the total energy consumed…

Moreover, adding the hub to HA using Matter, more or less none of the extra metrics/features are visible in HA (not even the power, which I did have while using Z2M).
