I have a sump pump in my basement and sometimes the breaker or GFCI will trip or something so it stops pumping water while the washer is running or someone is in the shower which in turn would cause the basement to flood. So I ordered a “normally closed” ball valve and paired it with the T2 Relay. Now I’m able to turn my water main off/on through the app or HomeKit, but then if the power goes out or the electrical circuit trips, it will shut off the water so it doesn’t flood the basement. I also went for the bonus points of putting some of the leak sensors in a few places around the house so if the washer or dishwasher leak they will also trigger the T2 Relay to cut power to the valve and shut off the water before there is too much of a mess.

@macuserjim Thanks for sharing your smart home water shutoff setup! It’s great to see how you’ve proactively addressed basement flooding risks by combining a normally closed ball valve with the T2 Relay—especially the backup for power outages or circuit trips, and adding leak sensors for extra protection. That’s a clever way to leverage smart devices for peace of mind!
Your experience could really help other community members dealing with similar concerns. If you have more details to share (like how you configured the automation between the leak sensors and T2 Relay, or any tips for installation), feel free to post—we’d love to hear more! ![]()
