Why “Trigger Once” Automations + Enable/Disable Can Save Your Sanity

Here’s a real-life example from my own smart home:

I have a walk-in cold room and monitor its temperature with an Aqara temperature sensor. If it gets too warm, I want a notification – simple, right?

Well… not always.

Originally, I had a basic automation: If temperature > 10°C → send me a notification.

Worked perfectly… until I started loading groceries into the cold room. With the door open, the temperature spiked briefly – and my phone went ding ding ding like it was auditioning for a nightclub DJ set.

Instead of just changing the trigger to “temperature reaches up to”, I decided to make it smarter:

Automation 1 – Trigger Once

Send me a notification if the temperature rises above 10°C.

But – run only ONCE. After triggering, Automation 1 disables itself.

Automation 2 – Reset Switch

If the temperature drops below 7°C (target is ~5°C), enable Automation 1 again.

Result:

  • I still get alerted if the cold room actually gets too warm.
  • No more spam when I’m just stocking shelves.
  • And I don’t have to manually reset anything.

This little setup shows why Trigger Once is so powerful – and why the Enable/Disable Automation action can make your smart home… well, smarter.

And always remember: “If your car is smarter than your house… you’re driving into the future while living in the past.” :red_car::house:

@RudyK Thank you for sharing your innovative approach to managing temperature notifications in your smart home! Your real-life example beautifully illustrates how using the “Trigger Once” feature in automations can prevent repetitive notifications, especially in situations like when you’re stocking the cold room. By coupling this with a “Reset Switch” automation, you’ve created an efficient system that minimizes disruption while ensuring important alerts aren’t missed.

In the context of Aqara’s automation capabilities, your setup highlights the flexibility and intelligence that can be achieved with smart home devices. It’s a great reminder of how these tools can be customized to fit our daily needs, making our homes not just smarter but also more attuned to our routines.

Your example is both practical and inspiring for others who might face similar challenges. Thanks for sharing your insights and encouraging the community to explore creative solutions in their smart home setups! We look forward to hearing more about your experiences and any other tips you might have. Keep the innovations coming!

I use Trigger once automations for tracking my toddler’s sleep. Sometimes they wake up and go back to sleep so I can check on them and either start their morning routine or turn the automation back on to monitor their sleep. Works great at reducing alerts for both parents.

Hi, @RudyK .
I also have such automation :slightly_smiling_face:.
I’ll tell you a little life hack, maybe you can use it too, I placed the sensor in a small baby food jar and closed it, now the temperature doesn’t jump sharply on the sensor when opening or closing the refrigerator.
