Hey everyone, I wanted to share an exciting project I recently completed to replace my old home security panel with a wireless tablet dashboard. It’s been a fun DIY journey, and I’d love to hear your thoughts and tips!
The Setup
I purchased a house with an outdated security panel that didn’t offer the flexibility I wanted. After some research, I decided to repurpose a low-cost 2021 Fire HD 8-inch tablet and a Qi wireless charger to create a sleek, modern dashboard. The tablet runs HomeAssistant, providing a comprehensive view of my smart home devices.
The Process
- Hardware Prep: I converted the tablet into a wall-mounted device using a low-voltage bracket and cable plate. The Qi charger was modified to fit seamlessly behind the wall plate, ensuring a clean installation.
- Power Management: The tablet stays charged via the Qi charger, and the screen remains active thanks to developer mode settings. This setup eliminates the need for any visible wires, giving it a professional look.
- Customization: I configured the tablet to display key security sensors, door/window statuses, and even integrated a dehumidifier controlled by a smart plug. The dashboard is now both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Challenges and Solutions
One hurdle was fitting the Qi charger’s USB plug through the wall plate. After some trial and error, I removed the charger’s casing and mounted the coil and PCB directly behind the plate. Electrical tape provided a temporary but effective solution for securing the components.
Results
The final setup is impressive! The tablet acts as a persistent dashboard, always showing the latest home status. It’s been a great way to consolidate my security and home automation systems into one intuitive interface.
Looking Ahead
I’m considering 3D printing a custom clip to secure the charger more permanently. If anyone has suggestions for improving this setup, I’d love to hear them!
This project has been a fantastic way to repurpose existing hardware and enhance my smart home setup. It’s a testament to how creativity and a bit of tinkering can lead to amazing results!
Cheers,
