As I delved into the world of Z-Wave, I encountered an intriguing challenge that turned into a valuable learning experience. Recently, I purchased two Kwikset 620 Z-Wave locks with Z-Wave 700 LR, hoping they would resolve my long-standing connection issues with my basement doors. However, the journey was far from smooth.
Initially, I attempted to pair these locks as long-range devices, but the process didn’t go as planned. The SmartStart would read the QR code and show the locks as ‘pending,’ but they would never complete the pairing. Frustrated, I switched to the standard pairing method, only to face the same issue—Hubitat listed them as pairing, but the bootstrap never completed, and they didn’t appear under the Devices page.
After several failed attempts, I decided to exclude the locks. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t respond to the exclusion process, even after waiting several hours. In hindsight, resetting the locks was probably not the best move, but I was desperate. Repeatedly trying to remove the devices from the Z-Wave Details page over several days also proved unsuccessful.
The situation took a turn when I noticed three ‘ghost devices’ on my network, which I couldn’t remove. This not only broke my Z-Wave network but also added unnecessary stress. However, this experience taught me the importance of patience and thorough research. I realized that sometimes, the solution lies in understanding the root cause rather than rushing into fixes.
In the end, I managed to resolve the issue by resetting the network and carefully following the pairing process again. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of persistence and the value of community support in troubleshooting complex issues. It also highlighted the need for meticulous attention to detail when dealing with smart home devices.
I hope sharing my journey can help others facing similar challenges. Remember, every obstacle is an opportunity to learn and grow in the fascinating world of smart home automation!
