I’ve been exploring the world of Zigbee devices lately, and it’s been a fascinating journey! Zigbee’s seamless compatibility and ability to create automated routines without constant supervision make it a fantastic choice for smart home enthusiasts. However, getting everything up and running hasn’t been without its challenges.
One of my recent projects involved connecting a new Aqara motion sensor and switch using Zigbee2MQTT alongside Mosquitto as the broker. The documentation suggested that factory resetting the devices and letting them join the network automatically should work, much like how my Philips switch did out of the box. But when I tried the same process with the Aqara devices, they simply didn’t show up in my device list.
After some research, I discovered that enabling permit_join in the Zigbee2MQTT configuration was crucial. I also had to ensure that my Mosquitto broker was correctly set up with MQTT discovery enabled. Despite these steps, the devices still didn’t connect. It was a bit frustrating, but I decided to try factory resetting them multiple times and holding the buttons longer to ensure they entered pairing mode.
Finally, after several attempts, the devices connected successfully! It was a relief to see them appear in my device list and start working as expected. This experience taught me the importance of patience and thorough configuration when working with Zigbee devices.
If anyone else is struggling with Zigbee connections, I’d recommend double-checking your configurations, ensuring all necessary settings are enabled, and giving the devices enough time to pair. Happy tinkering! ![]()
