Zigbee Router Flashing and Mesh Network Tips

Hey everyone, I’ve been diving into the world of Zigbee and mesh networking lately, and I thought I’d share some of my experiences and tips. If you’re like me and trying to expand your Zigbee network with a couple of routers, you might run into some challenges. I’ve been working with the SONOFF Dongle Plus (E) and trying to flash it with Zigbee router firmware. At first, it was a bit of a struggle, but I finally got it sorted out!

First off, I tried using SecureCRT, which I remembered using for the coordinator a while back. But no matter what I did—changing USB ports, using different cables, trying various software tools—it just wouldn’t transfer the firmware. It was really frustrating! I even tried using TI’s Flash Programmer and ExtraPutty, but nothing worked. I was starting to think maybe I should just give up and try a different brand, but I really wanted to stick with what I had.

Then, I stumbled upon a guide that suggested using a Python script method. It was a bit intimidating at first, but I gave it a shot. Turns out, it worked like a charm! The key was making sure all the dependencies were properly installed and that the script was pointing to the right firmware file. I also learned the importance of patience and not switching USB ports or cables mid-transfer.

Now that I’ve got my routers up and running, I’ve noticed a significant improvement in the mesh network coverage. It’s amazing how adding a couple of routers can make such a difference. I’m really happy I didn’t give up and stuck with the SONOFF dongles. They’re doing a fantastic job!

If anyone else is struggling with similar issues, I’d recommend double-checking your firmware file paths, ensuring all software prerequisites are met, and maybe trying a different flashing method altogether. Sometimes, persistence pays off!

I’d love to hear about your experiences with Zigbee routers and mesh networking. What tools or methods have worked best for you? Any tips or tricks you’d like to share? Let’s keep the discussion going!
