Followup to my project: Automated Balcony Lights

If you haven’t seen my first post, check it out. I’ve made custom balcony LED lighting using an Aqara LED Strip T1.

Now, to make this more complete looking and more convenient. I’ve also added some frosted string lights. My complete project looks like this:

I can’t wait until it becomes greener  We have a lot of plants and we have vines on the railing, and with the Aqara lights (and the string lights) it will look vet impressive and rustic in a few weeks.

What about the convenience, you might ask? The string lights are plugged via an Aqara Smart Plug (installed inside, I’ve run the cable through the window like the one for the LED strip).

I’ve also installed an Aqara Door and Window Sensor and Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 to fully automate the lights when we open the door.

Now, with a few handy automations, my lights are only turned on when it’s dark, and when the LED strip dims as it gets darker. I didn’t want blinding lights at 11PM on my romantic balcony, so based on the light intensity sensed by the P2, I adjust the brightness of the strip.

And the lights automatically turn on when we close the balcony. Which basically means we don’t use it, as we can only close it from the inside, there is no handle on the outside.

The automations

Note: those automations have “is open”, which looks like a duplicate, but one of the trigger is “the illumination drops to”.

“Is open” makes the automation only run (and correct the LED brightness) when the balcony is open. So it doesn’t run when it gets darker and the balcony is closed.

The automations will automatically adjust brightness when you open the door, and they will also adjust brightness when you leave the door open when it gets darker.

Can’t imagine the great vibe when you’re enjoying a cup of coffee or a glass of wine on the balcony!

Do you have some speakers on your balcony? So you can also start the right music on each situation and time

No, I don’t have any speakers on the balcony, but that’s actually a great idea
